# Input Data Formats
Implementing generic parser plugins and documentation This constitutes a large change in how we will parse different data formats going forward (for the plugins that support it) This is working off @henrypfhu's changes.

Telegraf contains many general purpose plugins that support parsing input data
using a configurable parser into [metrics][]. This allows, for example, the
`kafka_consumer` input plugin to process messages in either InfluxDB Line
Protocol or in JSON format.
Value parser, for parsing a single value into a metric closes #849

Any input plugin containing the `data_format` option can use it to select the
desired parser:
